Air Malawi picks Ethiopian Airlines as partner

MZUZU—After failing to run its the national airline, Malawi will now partner with Ethiopian Airlines which has won the bid to partner with government in running the newly formed Air Malawi 2012.

Ethiopian Airlines has been given the offer against Alpha and Omega of South Africa, Globe Business Network of Botswana, Fly Africa of South Africa and Air Express of Malawi who were also shortlisted as possible strategic partners.

According to MaraPost sources, Ethiopian Airlines will get 49 per cent in shares, the Malawi government 20 per cent and the remainder will go to interested individuals or companies.

Meanwhile government has sent on indefinite leave all 243 Air Malawi employees who, according to Privatisation Commission CEO Jimmy Lipunga, will be paid off.
