NSANJE (Maravi Post)—The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) understands that a win for opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in Nsanje Lalanje in the October by-elections will basically be a win for Lower Shire Political giant Sidik Mia and that scenario would really help validate the assertion that Mia is the political heavy weight for the Lower Shire, something DPP wants to prevent at all cost.
To achieve that, it has been unearthed that DPP has offered the Nsanje Lalanje MCP candidate Lawrence Sitilo 20 Million kwacha so that he should pull out of the coming parliamentary race.
“They (DPP) are panicking as they fear that Sitolo may win the elections hence doing everything possible to prevent an MCP-Mia win,” said a source privy to the issue.
It has been learnt that Sitilo, who in 2014, stood under the ticket of Peoples Party (PP) strongly came second from the late Member of Parliament, Sam Ganda.
“He is already a strong candidate as an individual and factoring in both Mia as well as the MCP effect in the equation assures of a possible MCP victory which people would rush to attribute it to Mia hence DPP feeling unease,” explained the source.
Meanwhile, the panic in the DPP camp over the issue has reached worrying levels, with the top brass mounting pressure on the party’s regional governor for the South Charles Mchacha to do everything possible to make Solomon pull out threatening he would be replaced with Noel Masangwi as governor if he feels to deliver on the assignment.
It is yet to be seen whether Sitolo, whose phone was still unavailable at the time of filing this report, will decide to sell his possible political fortunes to the DPP or will decide to fight to the end and perhaps find himself in Parliament come the November session.
