Jessie
Kabwira clinches SADC Women Parliament Presidency

The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum (PF) Women Parliament members this last week elected the Salima north west legislator of Malawi Congres Party (MCP) Jessie Kabwira, as its President.

The elections were conducted during the ongoing SADC-PF 41st Plenary Assembly session in Mahé, The Seychelles.

The session is held under the theme, “Harnessing Demographic Dividend in SADC through investment in Youth.”  Malawi Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya, who is also attending the meeting confirmed the ejection results.

“Allow me to take this opportunity to congratulate Hon. Dr Jessie Kabwila for being elected the President of the 1st SADC PF women Parliament,” Msowoya said.

Msowoya said the forum is going to start with a symposium that focuses on youth, during which SADC Member States deliberate the demographic dividend that the region’s youthful population presents.

The Plenary is SADC PF’s highest decision-making body; it brings together speakers of 14 National SADC Member States or their representatives and up to five Members or Parliament from member States, observers and resource persons.

In Malawi, Kabwira is the Chairpeson for the Parliamentary Committee of Women.

Malawi’s highly assertive legislature is yet to issue a comment on her election victory.
