Clash at Malawi-Mozambique border after arrest of police officer

Dave-ChingwaluBLANTYRE--There was chaos at Tsangano in Ntcheu after Mozambique police arrested a Malawi police officer who had crossed into their territory, Zodiak Broadcasting Station reported Wednesday.

The radio said angry Malawians attacked Mozambique police with stones and rescued the officer who had crossed the border to buy potato chips which is sold by vendors.

Another source told MaraPost the Mozambican officer had called for assistance to beat back the angry villagers but fled the scene before the situation got totally out of control.

Dave Chingwalu, Malawian police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of the Malawi officer, saying the Mozambican officer who conducted the arrest didn't like the idea of a Malawian officer in uniform crossing into their territory without authorisation.

The incident, which isn’t isolated, has been resolved, Chingwalu said.
