Malawi court in Mwanza sentences man to 8 years in jail for defiling sister in law Mwanza-(MaraviPost). Malawi court in the border and southern district of Mwanza has on Monday slapped a 52 year-old man with eight years in jail with hard labor for being found guilty of defiling a 15 year-old sister in-law.

Mwanza Police Station Spokesperson Edwin Kaunda confirmed The Maravi Post on Tuesday, May 10, the sentencing of Seveliano Zopangana who committed the offense on the night of April 30, 2016 at Sudala village in the district.

According to Publicist Kaunda the court heard that the convict on that fateful night took advantage of the absence of his wife who was admitted at Mwanza district and sneaked into the room where the victim who happen to be his sister in-law (his wife’s sister) was sleeping and started defiling her.

Zopangana enjoyed the sexual intercourse with the girl while his daughter observed as she was in the same room. Consequently upon arrival of the wife after being discharged from the hospital on the May 1, the daughter immediately informed her mother what his father Seveliano did with her younger mother.

“The wife eventually reported the issue to Mwanza Police on the May 2 and the convict was arrested on the same day. Seveliano appeared before Mwanza First Grade Magistrate Court on the May 9 where he pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement which is contrary to section 138 of the Penal Code.

“Although the convicts pleaded for lenient sentence as he has two wives and 14 children who depends on him, His worship Ranwell Mangazi sent him to jail saying his act was uncalled for as he was supposed to provide protection to the victim who happen to be his in-law and that the sentence was a warning to the perpetrators of domestic sexual violence,” said Kaunda.

Seveliano Zopangana hails from Sudala village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Kanduku in the boarder and Southern district of Mwanza.

Currently, the country’s media is almost on daily basis awash with stories of rape, defilement and the killing of people with Albinism.
