KARONGA, Monday, June 13, 2016, (MaraviPost): —The Federation for Disability of Malawi (FEDOMA) has asked the country’s Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to include people with disabilities into their activities in order for them to have their representatives in each and every sector.


Speaking during the meeting at Rupembe area in Karonga district, Becky Hola who is the project assistant of the disability inclusive in the programming project which is under FEDOMA said most of NGOs failed to include disabled people in their activities.


Hola also appealed to the residents in the district to involve disabled people in their community development committee for them to participate in the any activities.


“As organization, what we have seen is that most of the NGOs even the community have negative attitude toward disabled people especially when it comes to work,” said Hola.

“So we are telling them that disabled people can also do better just as any person. We want people with disabilities to play their roles in each and every activities carried in the community as well as organizations,” she added.


In his remarks, Chairperson for FEDOMA in Karonga Noah Simwaka expressed dissatisfaction with the disabled environment in the district.


“Without hiding, the environment we are leaving in as disabled people is not conducive. For instance, lack of disability friendly infrastructures as well as our representative in the development committees such as ADCs,” said Simwaka.


However, Hola commended the Center for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) for its effort to fight for the rights of disabled people in the district saying “it has made the community to change their negative perception.”


In his remarks, CHRR district coordinator in Karonga district Grecian Mbewe assured to continue pressurizing NGOs as well as the community to involve disabled people in the activities.
