Chanthunya faces death penalty; police give kudos to informant

BLANTYRE—Misozi Chanthunya who was captured on Tuesday could face the death penalty if convicted of killing his girlfriend, Linda Gassa in 2010.

Police authorities on Wednesday said a murder charge awaits 36-year-old Chanthunya, who will be expatriated to Malawi after his dramatic capture in South Africa by Interpol.

Davie Chingwalu, national police spokesman, told MaraPost that "obviously murder charges await" Chanthunya who allegedly killed his girlfriend, Gassa, and buried her in a concrete grave at his lakeshore cottage in Mangochi.

Chingwalu was full of praise of a Malawian lady informer who blew the lid off Chanthunya who was cohabitating with a Malawian woman in South Africa after fleeing from Malawi 18 months ago.

"Information had been coming from many Malawians who travel to South Africa that they had seen Chanthunya until this lady informed us the exact location and we contacted Interpol," he said.

Murder convictions carry a death sentence in Malawi although Chanthunya - again if convicted - may escape this as Malawi hasn’t executed anyone on the death roll since the introduction of multi-party democracy 18 years ago.

Death sentences end up being life sentences after former president Bakili Muluzi, in power from 1994 to 2004, vowed to never sign off a death sentence following worldwide condemnation of the death sentence led by human rights group Amnesty International.
