KARONGA (Maravi Post)—The Karonga Police in conjunction with the department of immigration as well as Forest, conducted a joint operation and arrested 22 illegal immigrants in the process.

Confirming the development to Maravipost, Karonga police Deputy Spokesperson George Mlewa described the operation as normal.

According to Mlewa, the 22 Tanzanians are those who were living in the district without documents.

“We indeed conducted a normal joint operation and we managed to arrest 22 Tanzanians who were staying in the country illegally. Some of them were doing business,” said Mlewa.

“Apart from this, we also confiscated different kind of items such as bags of charcoal,” he added.

The district deputy police spokesperson confided to this reporter that the 22 Tanzanians will appear before the court soon.

In a related development, Police in Chilumba in the south of Karonga confiscated and arrested 27 people during a sweeping exercise.

According to Chilumba police, the confiscated items include liquor sachets and different stolen items while out of the 27 arrested some were the most wanted suspects and the liquor sachet vendors.

Meanwhile, Paramount Chief Kyungu has commended the district police for reducing crime in the district.

Karonga is one of the districts in the country which is popular with crime and violence; however the coming in of the new Officer in Charge of the police Sekani Tembo has normalized things.
