LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- The main opposition Malawi Congress Party ‘ (MCP) member of Parliament for Salima North West Jessie Kabwira on Tuesday questioned the legibility of this year’s Independence celebration cloth with blue color of the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in it instead of the national emblem colors of black, red and green.
The observation comes barely a day before the nation celebrates 53 years of independence whose theme is titled, “Thanking God for the season of plenty”.
In an exclusive interview with The Maravi Post, Kabwira argues that the cloth design color, blue with Mutharika’s image emblazoned on it, reduces the celebration into a party festival.
Kabwira suggested that the right way for independence celebration cloth was to have national monuments with national colors on it than is the case.
She urged the DPP led government to avoid politicizing national events at the expense of the party politics that divide the nation.
“The cloth has a leader of DPP and the color of DPP on it. It does not carry 6 July as a day for the nation but it makes 6 July as a partisan function. There are a lot features that they could have put on the cloth for unity sake, talking of national stadium, bridges, some of the things that Malawi has achieved since independence.
“If MCP is invited, MCP is not blue, Alliance For Democracy (AFORD) is not blue, Peoples Party (PP) is not blue just like any other party that can be invited at that function, we need to unite as a country because since multi party, we have been waiting for a leader who can stop politicizing national events” says Kabwira.
But Joseph Mwanamveka, this year’s celebration chairperson who is also Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism disputed the claims of the cloth color saying there is nothing wrong with the design.
Mwanamveka said the face of the head of state, Mutharika on the cloth signifies the fatherhood for the nation.
The minister urged critics to the cloth’s design not to read too much saying it might divert attention of the celebration observation.
“There is nothing wrong with the 6 July celebration cloth. Mutharika is the head of state. On the color, citizens must not read too much on it as government could chose any color only that the color in question tally with the governing DPP color,” said Mwanamveka.
The nation’s colors includes black, red and green which have meaning to the country’s independence while blue is for DPP, MCP has green, PP takes Orange, AFORD carries blue and United Democratic Front (UDF) is yellow.
