LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-It has been quite an amazing year full of exciting events. 2018 saw its own share of Important headlines in the Entertainment industry.

People had fun in attending annual events ,gospel shows and Stand up comedy shows. A quote by Marian Wright Edelman that says “In every seed of good there is always a piece of bad”.


This describes the  Entertainment industry as it had its own ups and downs.


Here are some of the ups and downs that made headlines in the  industry in 2018;



Malawi’s legendary group popularly know as “Ma Bracks ” dropped their kuimba 11 album. The launch came with mixed feelings from Fans..Some of them said that the group delivered half baked album but others praised the Blacks for a job well done




On 28th April 2018,a 24 year old Malawi Assemblies of God University (MAGU) student Tiwonge Munthali was crowned Miss Malawi at Bingu International Conference Centre.

She outshined 14 other contestants and made away with a car,laptop,phone and cash price of MK7 million and Munthali replaced Cecelia Khofi.



The annual festival was a colourful one though it has some sad occurrences tagged to it .Lake of stars returned to the central region Salima for its 15th Anniversary .

The three-day event saw International Artists like Major Lazer and Kenyan Sauti Sol who lit the whole place like no other alongside other local artists like Faith Mussa,Zathu band and fredokis among others.There was sad moment as four vehicles got burnt at the event .




The three days festival managed by Impakt events had International Headliners like Jamaican reggae star Kenyata Hill and Amara Brown from Zimbabwe.

Black Missionaries,Anthony Makondetsa ,Lulu ,Wendy Harawa and Piksy were some of the local artists who performed at the event.Most of the festival goers said that the event was worth every penny and time.




The long awaited Urban Music People (UMP) Awards took place on 29th December at Robin’s Park in Blantyre.

Piksy picked up two awards the Artist of the Year Award as well as the Best Song for his track ‘Umakwana’.


Other winners include Zathu Band (Best Band), Mabiliganya Empire (Best Duo/Group), Gwamba featuring Fredokiss (Collaboration of the Year), Fredokiss (Humanitarian Award) and Shammah Vocals (Best Afro Soul).




The year 2018 had most debated and talked about stories




One of the mostly hot debated story of 2018 was losing weight of Gwamba.He made a choice to lose weight but this did not go well with his fans..Most of his recent pictures has became a topic of discussion especially on social media.Most of the facebook users picked on him and teased him.But Gwamba says he owe no one an explanation and it is his life and choices




In January 2018 ,Hip Pop artist in the country Mwiza Chavura was arrested over his song “Rape”.The Police said that he was arrested on matters relating to sexual assaults through his songs.Organisations, the public and some artists described the song as a mockery to the modesty of a woman and that it was propagating sexual violence, specifically rape.




Barely a month after Chavura’s arrest ,Born chris real name James Kanthumba was apprehended by the Police following a complaint from Queen B that her modesty had been put to shame in the face of the public through his song. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment but the sentence was later suspended..He was ordered to do 480 hours community service at Ndirande Health Centre




This is one of the stories has been talked about in 2018.We saw a number of Musicians joining the likes of Billy Kaunda ,Joseph Tembo and Lucius Banda in politics.Social media users think that most of these Musicians thinks that their fame is a ticket to the Parliament house.Some of the new faces are Tay Grin,Fredokiss ,Annie Matumbi and Collins Chitimbe






In 2018 Malawi lost some of its talent


One of the  deaths that came as a shock is James Nee Piringu’s death.The song writer and producer was involved in a road accident which claimed his life.A lot of people both in Malawi and outside the country poured out their heartfelt condolences over the death of Bushiri’s ECG great worshiper.


In September 2018 the Entertainment industry was in deep sorrow following the death of Gospel Artist Loyd Mainuka. Veteran Musicians described his death as a big blow  to the music industry
