Twenty-two year-old rising football legend, is this year’s Maravi Post Person Of The Year (MPPOTY). Tabitha scoops this year’s MPPOTY Award hands down for her rising fame in and outside Malawi, scoring points in games even where she plays for the first time, and her tenacity for reaching for the stars wherever her skills take her.
Tabitha Chawinga (born 22 May 1996) is a Malawian footballer (forward) who plays for Jiangsu Suning in the Chinese Women’s Super League.
Tabitha is the middle child of five children born to the Chawinga’s. She began playing football at age five and played with boys until age 13 when she began playing for a girls’ club known as DD Sunshine.
Tabitha was the first Malawi women’s footballer to play for a European club, when at age 18 she played for Swedish Third-Division club Krokom/Dvärsätts IF. She earned the League’s Golden Boot after scoring 39 goals in 18 games.
Chawinga joined Kvarnsvedens IK in Sweden’s Elitettan in 2015. In her debut game for the club, she scored a brace in a 4-0 win over Linköpings FC. The club finished in first place during the regular season with a 21–2–3 record.
Chawinga was the League’s top scorer with 43 goals – 14 more than the next highest scorer. The club’s first place finish, secured them the promotion to the Damallsvenskan for the 2016 season.
During the 2016 season, Chawinga was the third highest scorer in the League with 15 goals.
In 2017 for the second time, she finished as the League’s top scorer with 26 goals; this was despite her club’s relegation from the Swedish top flight at the end of the season.
After her successful football career in Sweden, Chawinga gained the interest from various top clubs in other countries, and eventually signed for Chinese side the Shanghai-based Jiangsu Suning, reportedly for a record-breaking transfer fee in Swedish women’s football history.
On 6 May 2018, she scored the winning goal in her full-length debut in an away game.
Tabatha has three awards to her name: a team award Elitettan winner in 2015 and two Individual awards Elitettan top scorer in 2015, and Damallsvenskan top scorer in 2017.
Congratulations to Tabitha Chawinga from the Maravi Post Team!
