BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-As almost three days are remaining for President Peter Mutharika who is also the Presidential aspirant for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to disclose his running mate and present his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), some local political analysts have warned Mutharika to be careful when choosing his right handman.
The analysts that include a Mzuzu based political pundit, Jackson Msiska said this after hearing some possible names that President Mutharika will choose from as his running mate in the social media.
Among the names disclosed in the social media include Kondwani Nankhumwa who is the minister of local government, Member of Parliament (MP) for Mulanje central constituency and DPP second vice president in the southern region, former speaker of parliament Chimunthu Banda and minister of health who is also Presidential aspirant for United Democratict Front (UDF) Atupele Muluzi.
Maravi Post understand that it is only presidential spirants who have power or mandate to choose a running mate according to his or her choice.
However, Msiska through his analysis described Nankhumwa as the worse running mate ever.
According to him, there are number of things that Nankhumwa need to clear out himself to Malawians and do before being appointed as running mate.
For instance, Msiska said Malawians are eager to know how Nankhumwa accumulated his worth in a short period of time and issues of his certificate that one person from his district alleged to be of his late brother.
Apart from that, Msiska also said that Nankhumwa is still a baby in politics and that he comes from the same region and tribe with President Peter Mutharika.
“If indeed the name of Nankhumwa is on the list of people that Mutharika is expected to select his running mate then it is a disaster. The man has number of questions to answer Malawians. Apart from that, he is from the same region and tribe with Mutharika therefore it will be difficult for President Peter Mutharika and DPP to get more votes from other regions, moreover many Malawians described DPP as the party that promote regionalism and tribalism,” he said.
According to him, Mutharika need to appoint someone from another region, tribe and with Good political background if he really want to win the coming polls.
While describing Chimunthu Banda as a good man, Msiska argued that the former speaker of parliament have no morale or big support in the central region apart from his constituency.
“Chimunthu Banda is just a good man. He has been with DPP but he not popular in his region, therefore it will be difficult for him to drum more support to Mutharika,” he argued.
Msiska however described Atupele Muluzi as the best choice for Mutharika.
“Mutharika should not be deceived, the young Muluzi will make him to achieve his goal. This is because Muluzi is from another tribe and region. He also controls the eastern region where he comes from. He has much experience as he also joined 2014 Presidential race and managed to be on position four, this shows that he have support in other regions too,” he disclosed.
Adding, “UTM Party and Malawi Congress Party have already joined into alliances with other political parties, therefore DPP and Mutharika needs the young Muluzi and UDF with the elections.”
