BLANTYRE—Mchinji district hospital has been drugged in awkward situation as private traders have suspended the supply of various food items to the hospital due to unpaid bills.
The hospital’s director Dr. Chimwemwe Banda conceded that the facility owes the food suppliers but attributed the hospital’s failure to settle the undisclosed bills to underfunding and devaluation of the Kwacha.
The facility requires K6 million to buy food items per month but they get K1.7 million a month from government, according to Banda.
Banda therefore urged the government to start providing the facility with enough money as patients are fed “nsima and boiled cabbage” that has low nutritional content.
