MZUZU—The body of a woman in Blantyre who drowned in Mpasa river Tuesday was found Wednesday in Chikhwawa, close to 20 miles away, witnesses said.
The woman only identified as Anaphumisa was from Josam Village in Traditional Authority Somba in Blantyre.
Makaiko Kantandiro, one of the villagers who’d been searching for Anaphumisa after she missing told MaraPost that the woman met her fate when she was coming from the garden.
“She found the river full and other men waiting to pass. The woman told the men that she couldn’t wait and jumped into the river but the speed of the water was just too fast for her to withstand.
“One of the men tried to rescue her to no avail,” Kantandiro told MaraPost in a telephone interview.
He further said the body of the deceased was discovered by a woman in Chikhwawa. But in a surprising move, the woman who discovered the corpse buried it quickly as she was afraid crocodiles would eat the body.
The woman then reported the incident to the chief of the area who was already aware of the missing woman in Blantyre. The chief then reported it to the relatives of the missing woman who quickly came to exhume the deceased’s body.
As MaraPost was talking to Kantandiro at around 6 pm on Wednesday, people were at the burial ceremony.
