MZUZU--People in Nkhata Bay are accusing the district’s People’s Party (PP) chairperson, James Thawe, of politicizing relief maize which is being distributed by the country’s president across the country to families affected by hunger.
Sources say Thawe has been distributing the maize to PP supporters only leaving out those most in need, a move which has irked many people in the district.
The sources also said the chairperson for Nkhata Bay Clergy Association, Rev. Kamija Nyirenda, asked for participation in the distribution of the relief food to help ensure transparency and impartiality but the PP officials refused.
PP Secretary General Henry Chibwana told the local media that he was aware of the issue and expressed concern that some people want to gain political mileage over the maize.
“I would personally not condone a situation where the vulnerable are cheated because somebody wants to fulfill his political ends. The maize is for the vulnerable regardless of one’s political affiliations,” Chibwana said.
