BLANTYRE—Malawi’s Leader of Government in Parliament Henry Duncan Phoya has the national assembly which reconvenes this Friday, February 8, 2013, may consider looking at electoral laws ahead of the 2014 tripartite elections.
“There is need to synchronize them. As such, there is a committee which is screening the electoral laws,” Phoya said in an interview Wednesday. “In the event that the committee concludes the screening process while legislators are meeting, the election laws will be considered so that they should be synchronized.”
He also indicated that parliament will also look at 17 bills apart from the two “carried over bills” from the last sitting. He didn’t mention the bills, saying that will be known during the meeting.
He however said the purpose of the meeting, which will be officially opened by Pres Joyce Banda, is to review the 2012/2013 midyear budget for government.
“We also need to back to parliament to inform legislators and Malawians how government spent the money allocated to it,” said Phoya.
