Malawi Parliament: Govt. yet to buy 300, 000 teacher’s chairs, tables

Eunice KazembeBLANTYRE—Malawi government is yet to buy 300,000 chairs and tables for teachers across the country, but the minister of Education, Eunice Kazembe has assured parliamentarians that her ministry will procure them before the end of 2012/2013 budget.

She however told the law makers that her ministry procured and distributed 60,000 desks for pupils in all 193 constituencies.

“The ministry was allocated resources to procure tables and chairs for teachers across the country, but I would like to state here that government is yet to procure 300,000 tables and chairs for our teachers in all 193 constituencies.

“We will set aside resources to procure the chairs to improve the status of our schools across the country,” said Kazembe in response to a question from a Mchinji East parliament.

She also said her ministry will construct 10 more girl’s hostels in some schools across the country before end of this year.

The midterm budget review meeting resumed by parliament resumed Tuesday morning at the parliament building in Lilongwe with question time and most questions were directed at the ministries of justice and constitutional affairs, health, education and sports and youth development.

Later, Speaker of the House Henry Chimunth Banda opened the floor for law makers to respond to Pres Joyce Banda’s State of the Nation Address.
