BLANTYRE—Former president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, is expected to be part of the team to mediate in the Lake Malawi wrangle between Malawi and Tanzania.
According to Patrick Kabambe, principal secretary in the ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, the Forum of Former African Heads of State and Governments proposed that the mediation process be done by a panel of three former presidents comprising Mbeki, Festus Mogae of Botswana and Mozambique’s Joaquim Chisano who is also the chairperson of the forum.
The two countries requested the forum in December last year to mediate the border dispute after they failed to reach a consensus on the matter.
The forum comprises former African heads of states from the Southern Africa Development Community region.
“The mediation process is now in the hands of the mediators for a way forward. The two countries will be waiting to hear from the forum on the way forward,” said Kabambe.
