MZUZU--Malawi lawmakers are seeking court's intervention to stop Pres Joyce Banda's public outbursts on their demands to have their fuel allowance arrears paid up saying the head of state is creating misconceptions.
Edwin Banda, member of a taskforce on the matter, said that only 140 MPs are entitled to the arrears as the figure excludes cabinet ministers and their deputies and not 193 as many people are putting it.
Pres Banda publicly mentioned recently that government wasn't ready to pay the Members of Parliament (MPs) the K5.2 billion they're demanding.
"The number of MPs that are supposed to get the payment isn't 193 as reported earlier, we've about 40 ministers and their deputies who are currently receiving their fuel allowances and they're therefore not entitled to the pay,"said Banda.
Nevertheless, if successful, MPs will force the Malawi treasury to cough out over K728 million which according to MaraPost sources could run a government department, for example the department of forestry, for a year.
