'Fishy' acts make Balaka police ‘worst performer’ in farm input programme

BLANTYRE—Malawi Police says law enforcers in the eastern region district of Balaka performed badly in the implementation of the government’s 2012/13 Farm Input Subsidized programme.

Government through the programme provides fertilizer and other farm inputs to targeted farmers across the country, but the distribution of the inputs was marred by theft, counterfeit coupons and other logistical problems, among others.

This prompted government to engage the law enforcers in the implementation of the programme to ensure smooth distribution of the inputs across the country.

But Urban Crime Investigations Officer for Lilongwe Frank Daniel Phiri described Balaka police as worst performer, saying the law enforcers in the district didn’t provide the required security in the implementation of the programme there.

“Balaka Police is worst performer. Our monitoring system has shown that police officers facilitated some fishy transactions at the expense of beneficiaries,” said Phiri on Thursday after touring the eastern region.
