BLANTYRE—Enoch Chihana, minister of sports and youth development, has blamed some Malawians for aiding foreign traders who are smuggling maize to neighboring countries especially Tanzania.
Chihana, a parliamentarian for Rumphi Central, also said Malawians need not sell their maize to foreign traders, whom he claimed, dupe local farmers.
“Malawians lacks responsibility as far as smuggling of maize concerned. We allow foreign traders to cross the borders with maize from Malawi to their respective countries.
“This has largely contributed to unavailability of maize in some areas let alone food insecurity in the country. He observed that last farming season farmers in the northern region harvested a lot of maize, but they have sold it all to traders from Tanzania.
