Malawian teachers threaten to down tools over unpaid salaries

BLANTYRE—About 400 Malawian primary school teachers in southern district of Chiradzulu have threatened to down tools if they don't receive their January salaries by Friday this week.

The teachers told Zodiak Broadcasting Stations Thursday that there has been no tangible response from authorities regarding the delay in processing their salaries.

They further claimed that in December last year government also delayed to pay them, a development which they said, impact them negatively.

But the district’s acting education manager Aleke Uladi, who attributed the delay to one of the commercial banks, said the salaries would be ready by the end of this week.

Uladi said he was aware that teachers' plans if they don’t get paid by Friday, but he asked them to give the bank, which is responsible to process their salaries, some ample time.
