Cama, govt. meet over January 17 petition February 15

Moses-KunkuyuBLANTYRE—Malawi government says it has invited the Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama), which presented a petition to Pres Joyce Banda’s administration on January 17, 2013, over soaring cost of living to a meeting Friday this week.

Government’s spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu said government delayed to respond because it was preparing a “comprehensive response” to the petition.

He said government’s proposal was for a meeting to take place Wednesday but Cama opted for Friday.
During the January 17 demonstrations, Cama instructed government to respond to the petition within 21 days, and this 21-day ultimatum expires on Friday as well.

“We are meeting them to show some of the actions done so far as part of addressing the concerns in the petition. When they come they should be satisfied that indeed this government has done something,” said Kunkuyu.
