Malawi’s opposition DPP to divulge its ERP at convention

Peter MutharikaMZUZU—Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) acting president Peter Mutharika has disclosed that they will unveil its comprehensive economic recovery plan (ERP) at the party’s national convention slated for April this year.

Mutharika disclosed this in an interview with ZBS during Tiwuzeni Zowona program on Sunday.

Ironically, the DPP has been accused of messing up the country’s economy when it was in power before Joyce Banda’s People’s Party (PP) took over the mantle. In an attempt to cure the country’s staggering economy, JB led government introduced the economic recovery plan which is yet to produce any results apart from skyrocketing of prices of commodities.

But Mutharika vowed that DPP will bring the country’s economy back on track once elected into power in 2014.

“I have assembled a team of seven economists working on how to put the economy back on track. We will unveil the document at convention so just wait; I can’t disclose the contents here,” said Professor Mutharika.

Asked why he has confidence that Malawians can again usher DPP into government considering that under his brother Malawi’s economy became fragile, Mutharika said Malawians are fair people and they know what is happening now.

“This government is impractical. They must go back to the drawing board. Malawians are noticing these things and they have hope in DPP because they know how we improved the economy,” he said.

Professor Mutharika also claimed that he is different from his late brother Bingu.
“People are not the same. Even family members approach things differently; you yourself could be different from your son or sister. I am Peter Mutharika and he was Bingu wa Mutharika,” he said.

He also dismissed claims by other DPP gurus that he was invited by US president Barrack Obama saying his visit to the US was private.
