BLANTYRE—The body of Senior Chief Chapananga was laid to rest Tuesday at his headquarters, Chapananga in Chikhwawa district where Pres. Joyce Banda and opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi were also in attendance.
Speaking briefly earlier, Pres. Banda expressed worry and sadness over the death of Senior Chief Chapananga, saying he was one of the chiefs who played a pivotal role in development at all levels.
The Malawi leader said she was more saddened because she was personally in good terms with chief, dating back to 1994.
“I knew him before he was installed as chief here. I always considered him as one of my brothers; that is why I asked the family delay the burial so that I should be in attendance as well,” said Banda.
Pres. Banda pledged support to the family, saying she would send them maize to take them trough this trying moment.
Chapananga died on Saturday at Mwaiwanthu Hospital in Blantyre and has left behind a wife and four children.
The country has lost at least four senior chiefs within a period of three weeks.
