Over one hundred illegal immigrant Malawians deported from South Africa; 840 others detained

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- About 150 Malawians were on Tuesday, deported from South Africa to Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in the capital Lilongwe.

They were deported for illegal entry into that country, and the other 840 Malawians are being detained at Lindela Repatriation center, also for illegal entry.

Malawi’s Immigration Dept. deputy national spokesperson Wellington Chiponde, said the illegal immigrants were on their way to Malawi.

Chiponde expressed disappointment at the rate Malawians are flocking to South Africa and other countries, without proper travel or foreign immigrant documents.

He therefore, urged Malawi citizens to follow foreign country immigrant regulations, to avoid embarrassment and loosing properties in the course of deportation.

“We received 150 Malawians deportees through KIA from South Africa, where they were detained for contravening immigrations laws of that country.

“This is a worrying situation, considering the number of Malawians that are usually deported. Holding a Malawian passport does not warrant for one to stay or enter into another country. But the people must also be familiar with immigration requirements in all the countries they are travelling,” urges Chiponde.

Many Malawians yearly flock to South Africa, with limited or no immigration documents, seeking green pastures, but they end up being victimized and deported.
