BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Pressure has mounted in the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) forcing President Peter Mutharika’s runningmate little known Everton Chimulirenji arguing that the latter’s choice is blow of wining ways ahead of May 21 polls.
According inside DPP sources told this reporter that Muhlakho wa a Lhomwe members and some chiefs from the southern region held an impromptu meeting Friday night where they expressed their anger on First Lady Gertrude Mutharika and President Peter Mutharika’s Security aide Norman Paulos Chisale accusing them of misleading the President.
The DPP inner circle are accusing The First Lady and Chisale for influencing President Mutharika’s choice of Chimulirenji whom they argue that he is not well-known in the party including the nation at large.
Mutharika however justified Chimulirenji choices as the person of integrity and that he does not have presidential ambitions.
The sources added that the meeting was called by Leston Mulli in Blantyre soon after Mutharika named little known Everton Chimulirenji as his runningmate. Chimulirenji hails from Ntcheu district.
Many people from DPP inner circles had hope that Mutharika will choose Henry Chimunthu Banda, Kondwani Nankhumwa and Bright Msaka and United Democratic Front (UDF) Atupere Muluzi as a running mate.
With the appointment of Chimulirenji as Mutharika’s running mate and in the event that DPP wins the May watershed elections, Chimulirenji will be Vice President, the people believe they are losing grip of the party.
“People are very angry with the First Lady and Chisale because they believe that it is them who influenced Mutharika to pick Chimulirenji. Even the chiefs at the meeting wondered why Mutharika acted this way,” said a source who attended the meeting.
“They have agreed to send a delegation to meet Mutharika and demand answers for his action before deciding what to do next,” added the source.
Inside sources at State House added that Chimunthu Banda was Mutharika’s favourites based on his political prowess demonstrated in Malawi Parliament as Speaker.
“It was after the Msaka issue that the First Lady and Chisale pushed for the name of Chimulirenji because he comes from Ntcheu and would protect them than other Mulhakho people. But they convinced Mutharika that Chimulirenji will counter the Saulos Chilima vote in Ntcheu and the boss was convinced,” said the source.
Apparently Nakhumwa and other DPP senior members boycotted blue night last night, Saturday in Blantyre.
The sources added that DPP inner circles are now pressuring Chimulirenji to resign as the runningmate that President Mutharika should choose another runningmate as the only option which Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will accept according to electoral laws.
DPP spokesperson Nicholas Dausi could not be reached for comment on inner circles discontent over Mutharika’s runningmate Chimulirenji since Friday evening.
The nation is yet to another political drum in the ruling DPP with its quest to continue governing after May 21 polls.
