Malawi court sentences telecoms cable thief to 5 years IHL

MZUZU--As theft of cables is still increasing, Nkhunga Second Grade Magistrate Court in Nkhotakota has convicted and sentenced a 36-year-old security guard for Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) to five years in jail.

The thief identified as Kennedy Sagonja of Nsanje worked at MTL office premises at Dwangwa Trading Center.

According to Sergeant Laban Makalani, Sagonja stole a coiled 20 paired cable of about 380 metres at the MTL premises during the night of 28th to 29th January, 2013.

“Police investigations revealed that the guard sold the cable to a famous dangerous known criminal at Dwangwa Trading Centre identified as Lyson Mlombwa, popularly known as ‘Yellowman’ in Nkhotakota,” said Makalani.

Police recovered the cable after receiving information that Yellowman was burning a cable at his house within the trading Centre. The guard pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and Magistrate Rex Nsolo hoped the imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) would be a lesson to others thinking of committing a similar crime.

The development comes a day after police in Lilongwe impounded a 15 tonne truck carrying cables suspected to have been stolen from MTL, ESCOM and the Water Board.
