BLANTYRE—President Joyce Banda Sunday evening launched the Joyce Banda International (JBFI) Inter-constituency football and netball leagues worth K100 million.
The ceremony took place at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre. It was initially supposed to take place in the afternoon at Kamuzu stadium, but was shifted to Sanjika Palace in the evening due to bad weather.
Pres JB failed to fly from Lilongwe to Blantyre because of the bad weather and she traveled by road instead.
Banda urged the faith community, civil society groupings and corporate world to partner government in development football at grass roots.
Such tournaments help young people drop promiscuous and unruly behaviors following their participation in local football and netball leagues, according to the Malawi leader.
The event was sponsored by One World Project and Jack Brewer Foundation Worldwide, which also presented 11,000 footballs to JBFI. The footballs will be distributed to many different organist ions in all 193 constituencies through JBFI.
