Following the death of BeForward Wanderers chairperson George Chamangwana, on Friday, Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has postponed the keenly anticipated Blantyre derby between Nyasa Big Bullets and Beforward Wanderers that was scheduled for this Sunday at Bingu national stadium.
Chamangwana a legend at the club, passed away in the early hours of Friday morning July 28, 2017 at Blantyre Adventist Hospital after a short illness.
According to a press release by SULOM, due to the death of Chamangwana, the derby will not take place on Sunday, which is in line with artical 17-4 of rules and regulation of SULOM’s Constitution.
SULOM further extended its sincerest condolences to BeForward and the bereaved family for the death of Chimangwana, who was the strength and the pillar of Malawi football.
“George Chimangwana, who will be remembered for building and reorganizing Wanderers to it’s current status that it is now, and his contribution as player and team manager,” the press release reads.
SULOM apologizes to all football fans for the inconvenience that the postponement of the match may cause.
The postponement of the match comes hot on the heels of Government decision to go ahead in playing Silver Strikers and Big Bullets during the 53rd Independence Celebrations following the stampede at the national stadium hours earlier, which claimed 8 lives. This decision then, attracted a lot of criticism from stakeholders.
