PRETORIA-(MaraviPost)-At least, 17 young people have been discovered dead at a nightclub in South Africa’s southern city of East London on Sunday.
The provincial police spokesperson brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana, confirmed that news in a statement on Sunday, June 26.
“We got a report about 17 people that died in a local tavern in Scenery Park which is based in East London and the victims were aged between 18 and 20 years,” said Kinana.

According to the Eastern Cape provincial community and safety department official Unathi Binqose, who was present at the scene of the tragedy, stampede has been ruled out as a cause of the deaths as there are no visible open wounds to the victims.
Binqose also disclosed that the patrons of the drinking spot at the time of the incident were students celebrating pens down, a party held after writing (high school) exams.
DispatchLive reported that bodies of the victims were discovered lying strewn across tables, chairs and on the floor; with no obvious signs of any injury.
Other reports indicate that the scene has been flooded with parents and guardians whose children did not sleep at home.
The parents who are trying to enter the tavern to look for their loved ones have caused some commotion leading to police officers flooding the area to calm the situation.
Meanwhile, police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
