Seeking Independent Voices: The importance of external research in growing radio audiences

0
Karon Clare, Co-founder & Director at Ground Control Research

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 3 October 2024 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/- Radio stations intent on retaining their audiences and gaining new listeners should draw on all available resources to do so, with independent listenership and programming research being one of the most valuable and effective tools at their disposal. Drawing on data-based insights can support stations’ strategies for building growth and momentum, positioning them effectively for future success.

That’s according to Anina Maree, co-founder and director at Ground Control Research, a leading pan-African digital media and consumer research company that has helped the continent’s most successful radio stations expand their listenership and boost their advertising income by talking to independent audiences.

Findings of a recent Ground Control Research poll revealed that 11% of radio stations surveyed across Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria turn to external, independent research agencies to gain insights about their audiences and to help them strategise for future growth, while the vast majority trust an in-house team to do audience research.

Nearly a third of radio stations don’t set up formal conversations with their audiences – they have off-air conversations with listeners who call in for competitions. While this may make listeners feel trusted and important to the station, it only draws on existing fans’ opinions, and doesn’t benefit from the fresh insights that could be gained from audiences yet to be won.

“Independent researchers have spent years honing their skills, building focus groups and designing questions to get the most helpful insights from diverse participants,” adds Karon Clare, co-founder and director at Ground Control Research. “An inclusive approach to audience testing helps radio stations crystallise their identity, guiding them to make better informed decisions about their choices of programming, presenters, and content.”

Having meaningful insights about what their existing and potential listeners hope to hear also helps stations better understand switching behaviour – what causes their listeners to seek content elsewhere, and what would win new listeners in their target market over.

These insights could be as granular as revealing listeners’ likes and dislikes about presenters, including their perceived integrity at a time when celebrities often embrace their potential as social media brand influencers, either within or beyond the context of their station commitments.

“Being able to gather these kinds of insights for our clients has meant that we’ve been able to offer solutions that balance presenters’ evolving roles in society with their station’s profile and content,” explains Maree. “For example, some hosts build greater engagement with their audiences if they’re paired with another personality, or even if they’re part of a presenting team, while others are better suited to solo presenting. Drawing on research findings and our years of experience in the industry has seen Ground Control Research support radio stations in redesigning their talent profiles, with great success.”

With 75% of radio stations surveyed across the three countries not having allocated any budget for external research, Clare emphasizes independent researchers complement and add value to internally designed and funded research projects, adding deeper insights and broader experience.

“Whether a station is doing call out music research, market and audience research, music mapping, or wanting to assess current or future talent prospects, independent researchers have their fingers on the pulse of the constantly evolving media industry,” Clare says. “Radio stations that know who their audiences are and what they want are the stations most sought after by advertisers, who expect specific and concise feedback about who their advertising spend will reach.”

Ground Control Research surveyed radio stations across three countries to gain insights into stations’ approaches to audience research and strategies for growth. American rancher gets 6 months in prison for creating hybrid sheep for captive hunting

A Montana rancher has been sentenced to six months in prison after cloning a “near threatened” sheep from Asia and then selling its offspring to shooting preserves, according to court documents.

Arthur “Jack” Schubarth, 81, will spend six months in federal prison, with a three-year supervised release, and pay a $20,000 fine and a $4,000 community service payment for cloning the Marco Polo sheep from Kyrgyzstan.

Schubarth was sentenced Monday for committing two felonies, conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act and substantively violating the Lacey Act, according to the Justice Department. The Lacey Act is a law that bans the trafficking of illegally taken wildlife, fish and plants.

Schubarth and at least five other people conspired to “create a larger hybrid species of sheep that would garner higher prices from shooting preserves” from 2013 to 2021, according to the Justice Department.

“Schubarth’s criminal conduct is not how Montanans treat our wildlife population,” said U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich for the District of Montana in a statement. “Indeed, his actions threatened Montana’s native wildlife species for no other reason than he and his co-conspirators wanted to make more money.”

Rancher illegally bought parts of the sheep

The rancher illegally brought parts of the Marco Polo argali sheep, one of the largest sheep species in the world, weighing 300 pounds or more, to the U.S., court records show.

From 2013 to 2021, Schubarth also sold mountain sheep, mountain goats and various other hoofed animals primarily to captive hunting facilities, according to the Justice Department.

Captive hunting facilities, or shooting preserves, allow “allow trophy hunters to shoot animals who are fenced in,” according to the Humane Society of the United States. “The animals are often semi-tame − some have even been hand raised or bottle fed by humans.”

“Argali sheep are trophy hunted due to their large size and unique long spiraling horns,” court documents said. “Argali horns are the largest of any wild sheep.”

Argali sheep have a market value of more than $350 per animal, according to court documents.

A protected species

The sheep are natives to the high elevations of the Pamir region of Central Asia and “are prohibited in the State of Montana to protect native sheep from disease and hybridization,” the Justice Department said.

The sheep are protected around the world by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and domestically by the Endangered Species Act, according to the Justice Department.

“This case exemplifies the serious threat that wildlife trafficking poses to our native species and ecosystems,” said Assistant Director Edward Grace of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement in a statement. “Mr. Schubarth’s actions not only violated multiple laws designed to protect wildlife, but also risked introducing diseases and compromising the genetic integrity of our wild sheep populations.”

Schubarth pleaded guilty in March
The rancher admitted conspiring to violate the Lacey Act and substantively violating the Lacey Act while owning and operating under Sun River Enterprises LLC, according to court documents filed in March in the District of Montana.

The crime has since “ruined his life, reputation and family,” his attorneys said.

He committed the crimes at Schubarth Ranch, a 215-acre alternative livestock ranch in Vaughn, Montana, records show.

“On a ranch, in a barn in Montana, he created Montana Mountain King (MMK),” the sentencing memorandum submitted by Schubarth’s attorneys said. “MMK is an extraordinary animal, born of science, and from a man who, if he could re-write history, would have left the challenge of cloning a Marco Polo to only the imagination of Michael Crichton (author of Jurassic Park).”

How did Schubarth create the giant hybrid sheep?
To create the hybrid sheep, Schubarth sent genetic material from the argali parts to a third-party lab to generate cloned embryos, according to the Justice Department. He paid a $4,200 deposit for the cloning, according to court records.

The rancher and his co-conspirators then used artificial breeding procedures to implant the 165 cloned Marco Polo embryos into female sheep on Schubarth Ranch, court records show.

Schubarth’s process would result in a single pure genetic male Marco Polo argali named “Montana Mountain King” or “MMK,” the Justice Department said. The rancher then used MMK’s semen to artificially impregnate other female sheep that were illegally possessed in Montana to create “hybrid animals,” according to federal authorities.

Schubarth’s and his co-conspirators’ goal was to “create a larger and more valuable species of sheep to sell to captive hunting facilities, primarily in Texas,” the Justice Department said.

Schubarth accused of selling sheep across the US

Moving the sheep in and out of Montana meant Schubarth and others had to forge veterinary inspection certificates and lie about how the sheep were legally permitted animals, according to court documents. The rancher also would sell MMK’s semen directly to sheep breeders in other U.S. states, the documents said.

In addition to argali sheep, Schubarth illegally bought genetic material from wild-hunted Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in Montana, court records show. He violated Montana law by purchasing parts of the wild-hunted sheep and selling them. He also sold bighorn parts in different states, federal authorities said.

“This was an audacious scheme to create massive hybrid sheep species to be sold and hunted as trophies,” Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division said in the release. “In pursuit of this scheme, Schubarth violated international law and the Lacey Act, both of which protect the viability and health of native populations of animals.”

MRA reveals MDF and Police Officers involved in smuggling, bleeding Malawi's economy

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has revealed disturbing information about the involvement of certain members of the Malawi Defense Force (MDF) and police officers in smuggling activities, contributing to the severe economic challenges Malawi is facing. The shocking disclosure was made on Tuesday when MRA officials appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security.

According to MRA Executive Director of Corporate Services, Douglas Kamchomoza, these security personnel are facilitating the smuggling of goods such as minerals, ivory, beer, and other contraband items across the country’s borders. This illicit activity is exacerbating the economic woes of the country, draining its much-needed revenue and undermining efforts to curb illegal trade.

“Malawi is losing a lot, but the security agencies are shielding each other, smuggling minerals, ivory, beer, and engaging in trafficking issues,” Kamchomoza stated.

The involvement of those tasked with upholding law and order in such illegal practices has raised significant concerns. The MRA has indicated that the smuggling is not only widespread but deeply entrenched, involving coordinated networks of individuals within these security agencies. The illicit trade is thought to involve highly valuable resources, including minerals and ivory, which are often smuggled out of the country, causing long-term economic harm.

The revelation before the Parliamentary Committee highlights the complexities in fighting smuggling, especially when those responsible for border security and law enforcement are complicit. MRA has acknowledged the difficulty in dealing with such cases, as there is often a lack of accountability among security agencies, with members shielding one another from investigation and prosecution.

Smuggling in Malawi has been an ongoing issue, particularly along its porous borders with neighboring countries. The MRA has previously reported significant revenue losses due to this illegal activity, and the recent revelations involving high-ranking security personnel have further deepened concerns about the country’s ability to combat these challenges.

Members of Parliament sitting on the Defence and Security Committee expressed outrage at the news, calling for immediate measures to curb the smuggling and bring those involved to justice. They emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into these claims and for stronger oversight mechanisms to hold security officers accountable for their actions.

The involvement of security forces in illegal trade activities undermines not only the rule of law but also Malawi’s reputation in the international community, particularly in its commitment to combat wildlife trafficking and mineral smuggling. The long-term economic impacts of these smuggling activities are also significant, with the country losing millions in potential revenue that could otherwise be used for development projects.

As MRA continues to raise alarm over these practices, it remains to be seen what action the government will take to address the involvement of MDF and police officers in smuggling operations. Malawians will be watching closely, as the integrity of the country’s security agencies is called into question amid these revelations.

UDF Supporters Reject Potential Alliance with MCP Amid Fears of Betrayal

UDF Supporters Reject Potential Alliance with MCP Amid Fears of Betrayal

By Twink Jones Gadama

A storm is brewing within the United Democratic Front (UDF) as supporters vehemently oppose any potential alliance with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The UDF’s history with the MCP is complex, with many viewing the latter as a “murderous party” responsible for past harm and violence.

At the UDF’s recent convention, Bakili Muluzi, the party’s patron, expressed concern over the absence of MCP members.

However, UDF supporters were quick to reject any notion of an alliance, citing the MCP’s troubled past.

They warn that any attempt to partner with the MCP will be met with swift action against the party.

A Troubled History

The UDF’s roots date back to 1992, when it was founded by Bakili Muluzi.

The party played a crucial role in Malawi’s transition to democracy, with Muluzi serving as president from 1994 to 2004.

However, the UDF’s relationship with the MCP has long been strained.

Supporters argue that the MCP’s history of violence and harm makes it an unsuitable partner.

They fear that an alliance would betray the UDF’s values and legacy.

Atupele Muluzi, the UDF’s president, is under pressure to resist calls for an alliance with the MCP.

Internal Tensions Rise

The UDF’s decision to invite the MCP to its elective conference sparked outrage among party members.

Many view the move as a betrayal of the party’s principles.

The UDF’s leadership faces a daunting task in balancing the party’s values with the potential benefits of an alliance.

As tensions rise within the UDF, the party’s leadership must navigate this complex issue carefully.

The fate of the UDF hangs in the balance, with supporters demanding that the party remain true to its values and legacy.

In the words of one UDF supporter, “We cannot betray our principles by partnering with a party responsible for so much harm.

The UDF must stand strong and reject any alliance with the MCP.” The coming days will reveal whether the UDF’s leadership will heed this call.

Chimwendo Banda dresses down Transport Minister Hara on Local councils financing

0

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of local government ,Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda bemoans Minister of Transport, Jacob Hara’s remarks on pushing financial matters of local councils to District councils while his ministry is mandated to do so.

Chimwendo made the remarks on Wednesday, October 2, during the launch of the Decentralization policy.

Chimwendo said the minister’s tricky answer on how district councils should provide for themselves using district council’s funds is a disappointing response from the minister.

“Where will the DCs get the money when the minister is being tricky in responding to issues of financial developments of the districts,’ said Chimwendo.

He has asked the councils to be fully in custody of their own areas.

The launch of the policy was themed “Deeping Decentralization bridge to Malawi 2063.”

Recently, Minister Hara was mentioned in the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) financial fishy deals but NOCMA later refuted the allegations publicly.

On his part, United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF) representative Shadrack Omol said the launch of the policy shows government’s commitment in making sure that the right decisions are made at the right time.

Concurring with UNICEF, Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) Executive Director, Hadrod Zero Mkandawire said the policy seeks to fill the gap even though political will is key to decentralization.

He said for all the councils to have clean audit reports is a plus to decentralization.

Representatives of all the DC’s, Thyolo District commissioner, Hudson Kuphanga said the document will help them work together with other ministries who seem to be superial.

AFRICOM Furthers Commitment to African Partnerships by Supporting IMET and Educating Today’s Military Leaders

STUTTGART, Germany, 03 October 2024 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/- The commander of U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Michael Langley, furthered the command’s desire to deepen its partnerships and defense relations by empowering today’s leaders during a discussion with students attending Marine Corps University and the U.S. International Military Education and Training program on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, in Quantico, Virginia.

The commander of U.S.

Students, representing numerous allied and interagency partners, and sister services from the U.S. Department of Defense met with Langley to garner his insight on how they can leverage their current training to assist in strengthening relationships with our African partners while supporting efforts to build partner nation capabilities.

“Advancing relationships with our African partners is an effort that requires unification from a three-dimensional approach,” Langley stated. “Your participation in your respective program is a testament of how two dimensions of this dynamic approach – Diplomacy and Defense – marry together to strengthen our defense institutions through shared values.”

For AFRICOM, a U.S. Combatant Command whose primary mission is multilayered, opportunities to work with and educate rising leaders in allied defense organizations builds a bridge to foster interagency efforts that later assists in negating the drivers of conflict and extremism found throughout Africa’s regions.

“I cannot emphasize enough the value that’s placed on the partnerships we maintain, nurture and cultivate across the continent,” said Langley. “Having our African partners at the center and forefront of what we do solidifies our partnership and efforts to promote regional security, stability, and prosperity in Africa.”

Started nearly fifty years ago, the IMET program is an instrument of U.S. national security and foreign policy that has a purpose of promoting more professional militaries and defense cooperation between the U.S. and foreign countries through training. As the Professional Military Education proponent, Marine Corps University develops the professional competence of its Marines, other service, international, and civilian students. After completing their respective course, graduates are prepared to lead and perform more effectively in multinational environments at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels.

NAP condemns DPP legislator Chikwanje’s violence remarks

0

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s National Advocacy Platform (NAP) has strongly condemned the recent inflammatory remarks made by opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Eastern Region Governor Daudi Chikwanje which allegedly called for mob justice against supporters of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Chikwanje who is in currently in court to answer criminal charges on violence, his remarks have sparked widespread concern as Malawi approaches the 2025 general elections.

In a press statement, NAP Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe condemned such reckless rhetoric poses a significant threat to the peace and democratic integrity of the nation.

Kondowe observes that while the Malawi Constitution guarantees the rights to freedom of association and political participation, these rights must be exercised responsibly and without inciting violence.

“Inciting violence and promoting lawlessness jeopardize our country’s peace and stability,” he said NAP Chairperson.

Kondowe therefore urged political leaders from all sides to reject hate speech and foster a culture of respectful political discourse.

Under the Penal Code, incitement to violence is a criminal offense, and NAP called on the Malawi Police Service to investigate and prosecute those responsible for such inflammatory statements, regardless of their political affiliation.

The organization also referenced the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act, which criminalizes the use of electronic communications to incite violence and disturb public peace.

Kondowe also laid out several urgent calls to action, including a demand for political leaders to promote constructive dialogue and for law enforcement agencies to be empowered to address incitement to violence swiftly.

He however warned that failure to act against such incitements could undermine the upcoming elections and risk plunging the nation into instability.

“The time for action is now—Malawi’s democracy and peace depend on it,” says Kondowe.

On Monday, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda also condemned DPP legislator for inciting violence arguing that the nation has no space for such bad remarks.

Japan Energy Generation
In Japan, walking and driving now generate electricity

By Burnett Munthali

October 2, 2024 – Japan continues to innovate in the field of sustainable energy, introducing technologies that harness electricity from both human footsteps and the movement of cars. As part of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the country is transforming everyday activities into renewable energy sources, providing a glimpse of what smart cities of the future might look like.

In high-traffic areas such as train stations, shopping malls, and city sidewalks, Japan has installed energy-harvesting floor tiles that capture kinetic energy from walking. Every step people take on these special tiles generates electricity, which is stored and used to power nearby facilities such as lights, digital billboards, and public charging stations. This innovative technology aims to make urban spaces more energy-efficient while reducing the strain on traditional power grids.

Japan
In Japan, walking and driving now generate electricity

The ingenuity does not stop at pedestrian traffic. Japan has also developed roadways equipped with similar technology that captures the kinetic energy from cars as they drive over special surfaces. The weight and movement of vehicles, especially in congested urban areas, create substantial energy that can be converted into electricity. This energy can power streetlights, traffic signals, and even some electric vehicle charging stations.

Experts in Japan see these advancements as crucial in the fight against climate change. By using both human and vehicular movement to generate electricity, the country is reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and promoting cleaner, renewable energy sources. This dual approach is part of Japan’s broader initiative to build smart cities that integrate cutting-edge technology with environmental sustainability.

As the world grapples with energy shortages and the need for greener solutions, Japan’s success in turning everyday activities like walking and driving into power sources demonstrates that the future of energy could lie in the simple, repetitive actions of our daily lives.

Nkhatabay District Council Blocks Sale of Kaning'ina Forest Reserve Land

By Twink Jones Gadama

In a bold move to protect Malawi’s natural resources, the Nkhatabay District Council has stopped Traditional Authority (T/A) Thula from selling a portion of the Kaning’ina Forest Reserve to Shepherd Bushiri’s Goshen Trust.

The council’s decision comes after it was revealed that T/A Thula and his subordinates were attempting to sell off the land, which is designated as public property.

The council emphasized that the land belongs to the Kaning’ina forest reserve and, as such, cannot be sold by chiefs.

Designated as a forest reserve in 1935, the Kaning’ina Forest Reserve covers an area of 143.02 km² and is managed by the government.

The reserve is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and supporting local ecosystems.

The council’s actions have been praised by environmentalists and local communities, who recognize the importance of preserving Malawi’s natural resources.

Deforestation and land degradation are significant concerns in Malawi, with Nkhata Bay losing 8.49 kha of natural forest in recent years.

The move to block the sale of the land is seen as a significant step towards protecting Malawi’s forests and promoting sustainable development.

The government has made efforts to conserve forest biodiversity, including initiatives to engage local communities in forest management.

The Nkhatabay District Council’s decision sets a precedent for protecting Malawi’s natural resources and promoting sustainable development. As the country continues to grapple with environmental challenges, bold actions like these are crucial for preserving its rich biodiversity.

Former President Bakili Muluzi says we need Unity

By Twink Jones Gadama

Former President Bakili Muluzi, now patron of the United Democratic Front (UDF), emphasized the party’s commitment to unity and non-nepotism during the recent convention.

Muluzi defended outgoing UDF President Lilian Patel and convention chairperson Aisha Adams, asserting they did not disrupt the event’s proceedings.

Muluzi’s speech was notable for its emphasis on peace and unity, sparking speculation about a potential alliance with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). The UDF has historically championed democracy in Malawi, ousting the MCP from power in 1994.

However, recent developments suggest a possible realignment of political forces.

Atupele Muluzi, who resigned from the party and later rejoined, has taken the reins as UDF president.

Bakili Muluzi jokingly expressed interest in competing for the presidential post but feigned fear of being defeated by younger candidates.

The UDF’s history is marked by significant milestones, including becoming the majority party in parliament with 75 seats, surpassing the MCP’s 59 seats.

The party’s current trajectory, potentially culminating in an alliance with the MCP, has sparked intense debate.

Possible Alliance with MCP?

Rumors of an MCP-UDF alliance have been circulating, with some analysts interpreting Muluzi’s speech as an olive branch to the MCP.

The UDF’s invitation to the MCP to attend the convention has already generated controversy within the party.

As Malawi’s political landscape continues to evolve, the UDF’s stance on unity and potential collaborations will be closely watched.

The developments within the UDF and potential implications for Malawi’s political landscape will continue to unfold in the coming months.

Malawi Seeks Sustainable Food Systems Amidst El Niño Crisis

By Twink Jones Gadama

Malawi’s Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Charles Kalemba, has made a passionate appeal to donors to support the country in building sustainable food systems.

This call to action comes as Malawi faces a severe food insecurity crisis, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon.

Speaking in Blantyre during a joint media briefing with the World Food Program (WFP) Malawi and other donors, Kalemba emphasized that handouts are not a viable long-term solution to the current challenges.

“We need sustainable food systems that can produce enough food at all times,” he stressed.

The numbers are staggering: over 5.7 million people are currently facing food insecurity, according to projections by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC).

Kalemba warned that this situation will persist unless sustainable measures are implemented.

In response to the crisis, the WFP has launched an emergency response program, securing funding to purchase 33,000 metric tons of maize and 317 metric tons of Super Cereal Plus, a corn-soya blend distributed to children.

Paul Turnbull, WFP Malawi Country Director, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the crisis.

“We are committed to supporting Malawi in building resilient food systems,” he said.

Siri Frette Allsted, Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Norway, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for unity among the international community in responding to the crisis.

Norway has pledged increased support for both immediate and sustainable initiatives.

Malawi’s food systems face numerous challenges, including climate change, environmental degradation, and demographic pressures.

To address these issues, experts recommend promoting production of nutrient-rich foods, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices, and supporting farmers with inputs and extension services.

The Malawi government has shown commitment to transforming the country’s food systems, recognizing the importance of sustainable agriculture and food production.

However, more support is needed from the international community to ensure the success of these initiatives.

As Malawi struggles to cope with the El Niño crisis, the need for sustainable food systems has never been more pressing.

The international community must come together to support Malawi in building resilient food systems that can withstand future challenges.

As Malawi works towards building sustainable food systems, the international community must stand in solidarity with the country. Together, we can ensure that MaPartnerd more resilient from this crisis

Lake Malawi MV Chambo

By Twink Jones Gadama

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mozambican vessel, MV Chambo, has resumed its operations on Lake Malawi, bringing relief to travelers and businesspeople from Likoma and Chizumulu Islands.

The vessel’s return was initially scheduled for September 25 but was delayed due to the expiry of its life rafts.

However, following necessary maintenance and safety checks, MV Chambo set sail once again, reinstating its vital transportation link between Mozambique, Likoma, Chizumulu, and the mainland.

According to Watson Maingo, spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport, the resumption of MV Chambo’s services will significantly alleviate congestion faced by travelers from the islands.

“The vessel will provide an alternative route for people traveling to and from Likoma and Chizumulu, reducing reliance on the Illala, which only docks once a week,” Maingo explained.

MV Chambo’s revised schedule will see it sail from Mozambique to Nkhatabay via Likoma and Chizumulu on Wednesdays and return to Mozambique via the same route on Thursdays.

This regular service will enable islanders to access the mainland more efficiently, facilitating trade, commerce, and social interactions.

Emmanuel Saidi, a Likoma-based businessperson, welcomed the vessel’s return, citing the challenges faced during its absence. “Traveling was difficult, as the Illala only comes once a week.

With MV Chambo operating again, things will be easier for us to reach the mainland with our businesses on time,” Saidi remarked.

The resumption of MV Chambo’s operations is expected to boost economic activity in the region.

Island-based entrepreneurs will now have more opportunities to transport goods and services to the mainland, enhancing trade and commerce.

Likoma District Commissioner, Emmanuel Bambe, expressed gratitude to the Mozambican government for reinstating the vessel’s services.

“This development will improve the lives of our people, facilitating travel, trade, and access to essential services,” Bambe said.

The return of MV Chambo also underscores the strengthening bilateral relations between Malawi and Mozambique.

The vessel’s operations demonstrate the two countries’ commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and economic integration.

Passengers and cargo will benefit from competitive pricing and flexible scheduling.

MV Chambo’s capacity to transport both people and goods will alleviate pressure on existing transportation infrastructure, promoting economic growth and social development.

As MV Chambo sets sail once again on Lake Malawi, the people of Likoma and Chizumulu Islands look forward to improved connectivity, enhanced economic opportunities, and a brighter future.

Professor Abdoulaye Diabaté’s frank conversation with Bill Gates

0

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso, 2 October 2024 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/- As an African scientist deeply invested in malaria research, Professor Abdoulaye Diabaté, Head of Medical Entomology and Parasitology at the Research Institute in Health Sciences in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, and Principal Investigator of Target Malaria Burkina Faso, was recently featured in a Netflix series called ‘What’s Next? The Future With Bill Gates.’

The documentary series is an incredible platform to show how Professor Diabaté, Target Malaria and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are bringing science and philanthropy together to foster creativity, innovation, and sustainable solutions for the advancement of global health, and more importantly the malaria crisis in Africa.

Episode 5, ‘Can We Outsmart Disease?’ directed by Alex Braverman, focuses on the history of malaria and current efforts to find new strategies in Africa, such as vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and genetically modified mosquitoes. In the episode, Professor Diabaté has a frank conversation with Bill Gates pointing out that if malaria was killing 600,000 people in the USA or Europe, the problem would have completely changed by now.

Prof. Abdoulaye Diabaté (left), Philip Welkhoff (middle) and Bill Gates (right)

“Malaria is tightly linked to poverty, and it is incredibly expensive to be poor. Two hundred million cases worldwide end up every year with approximately 600 000 deaths. Most of these deaths happen in Africa where children and pregnant women pay the highest price,” says Diabaté. “I want to bring global awareness to the impact the disease has on livelihoods and economies while ensuring that African voices and expertise play a central role in the development and evaluation of innovative technologies.”

Malaria’s impact on Africa

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that, in 2022, Africa was home to 94% of malaria cases (233 million) and 95% (580 000) of malaria deaths. Children under five accounted for about 78% of all malaria deaths.

Earlier this year, Professor Diabaté took the stage at TED talking about his firsthand experience with malaria, a personal motivator to his tireless efforts to develop new tools to fight the disease in Africa.

The Economic Impact of Malaria

Malaria No More (MNM) United Kingdom (UK) commissioned Oxford Economics Africa to assess the future economic impact of malaria on the countries most exposed to the disease, as well as at Africa and global levels. The report “The Malaria Dividend” demonstrates that the potential global economic gains of realising the SDG targets in all malaria-endemic countries could significantly boost the GDP of malaria-endemic countries by US$142.7 billion. The research also showed reaching this goal could generate an additional $31bn in exports to some of the most affected malaria endemic countries in Africa; with an almost $4bn rise for G7 countries.

Funding, innovation and capacity building

According to a new report by the Global Fund, investments in the fight against HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria have saved a total of 65 million lives and cut the combined death rate from the three diseases by 61% since 2002. The Global Fund accelerated the equitable deployment of tools for prevention, testing and treatment, including the distribution of 227 million mosquito nets, the testing of 335 million suspected malaria cases, and the treatment of 171 million malaria cases.

The need for new tools

Despite these advances, progress in the malaria fight has stalled with 5 million new cases in 2022 compared to 2021. A series of factors include: resistance from mosquitoes against the most common insecticides, resistance from the parasite against artemisinin-based combination therapies (the current best available drugs), climate change affecting the spread of malaria mosquitoes, and mosquitoes changing biting behaviours. The WHO noted that continued investment in the development and deployment of new malaria vaccines and next-generation tools will be key to achieving the 2030 global malaria targets.

The future of gene drive technology

“There’s more money put into baldness drugs than malaria. I was shocked when I saw how little money was going into malaria research,”says Bill Gates in the episode.

Target Malaria is pioneering the use of gene drive, a natural genetic mechanism, to spread a genetic modification in malaria mosquitoes that biases the rate of inheritance and affects their ability to reproduce. This innovative approach holds the promise of being a sustainable and cost-effective method to reduce the population of malaria mosquitoes and ultimately halt malaria transmission in the future.

“We don’t have gene drive mosquitoes in Africa yet, for many reasons. There are many things that must be in place to make sure you have something solid, and safe for the community and its environment,” added Prof Diabaté.

“It would be one of mankind’s biggest achievements to finish off malaria,” concluded Bill Gates.

The documentary premiered on September 18th, on the streaming site Netflix.

Malawi: UDF convention kicks off amid political tensions

UDF convention kicks off amid political tensions

By Burnett Munthali

The United Democratic Front (UDF) has officially launched its much-anticipated national convention this morning at the Comesa Hall in Blantyre, attracting a significant turnout from party members and supporters. However, the event has been marked by notable political tensions, as all parties have been invited except for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The exclusion of the MCP has sparked discussions about the current political landscape in Malawi, with some criticizing what they perceive as a lack of inclusivity and dialogue among major political factions. Team Bon Kalindo the DC took to their Facebook page to voice concerns over the political climate, calling attention to issues of intelligence and integrity in leadership.

In their post, they remarked, “Because of foolishness and the tendency to deceive people with empty promises, resources are being squandered while leaders continue to enjoy lavish lifestyles.” This criticism reflects a growing sentiment among Malawians who are frustrated with the political elite’s handling of the nation’s challenges, particularly in a time of economic struggle.

Kalindo’s team emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among political parties to address the pressing issues facing the nation, rather than the prevailing divisive politics. The post indicated that every party has a role to play in the development of Malawi, and that engaging in constructive dialogue is crucial for progress.

As the UDF convention unfolds, it remains to be seen how the discussions and decisions made will influence the party’s direction and its stance in the lead-up to the 2025 General Elections. The UDF aims to position itself as a key player in the political landscape, and its ability to address internal challenges while fostering unity with other parties will be critical for its success.

With heightened expectations from supporters and critics alike, the UDF convention serves as a pivotal moment for the party and the broader political community in Malawi. As leaders gather to deliberate on important issues, the call for integrity, accountability, and collaboration resonates strongly within the current political discourse.
