As the year 2023 comes to a close, it is imperative to reflect on the performance of Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera, who came into power with high hopes and promises of change.

However, despite the initial optimism surrounding his presidency, it has become increasingly evident that Chakwera’s tenure has been marred by major failures and a lack of progress.

This article aims to shed light on some of the most significant shortcomings of President Chakwera’s administration, highlighting the missed opportunities and broken promises that have left Malawi’s citizens disillusioned and disheartened.

Economic Stagnation and Unemployment Crisis

One of the most pressing issues facing Malawi during Chakwera’s presidency has been the stagnant economy and the alarming rise in unemployment rates.

Despite promising to prioritize job creation and economic growth, Chakwera’s administration has failed to implement effective policies to stimulate the economy.

As a result, Malawi continues to struggle with high levels of poverty and a lack of opportunities for its citizens, leaving many disillusioned with the government’s inability to deliver on its promises.

The recent devaluation of Malawi’s Kwacha against the dollar was the suicide Chakwera’s government committed. The pangs of that inconsiderate move are biting hard on Malawians.

Chakwera had also depleted the government’s purse through his international trips which he accepted and later ordered his ministers to stop going for international trips.

Corruption and Lack of Accountability

Another major failure of President Chakwera’s administration has been the lack of progress in tackling corruption and ensuring accountability within the government.

Despite vowing to fight corruption and hold those responsible accountable, Chakwera’s presidency has been marked by a lack of concrete action in this regard.

The absence of significant prosecutions and the failure to implement robust anti-corruption measures have eroded public trust and further perpetuated a culture of impunity. His Ministers are implicated in corruption but no action was taken and Kenzie Msukwa was heavily shielded.

Inadequate Healthcare System

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the weaknesses in Malawi’s healthcare system, and unfortunately, President Chakwera’s response has been far from satisfactory.

Despite promising to prioritize healthcare and improve access to quality medical services, the government’s efforts have fallen short.

Malawi continues to face challenges in terms of inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of medical personnel, and limited access to essential medicines.

This failure to address the healthcare crisis has had dire consequences for the well-being of Malawi’s citizens.

Education System in Crisis

Education is the cornerstone of any nation’s development, yet Malawi’s education system has been in a state of crisis under President Chakwera’s leadership.

Despite pledging to prioritize education and invest in improving the quality of schools and access to education, the government has failed to deliver on these promises.

Many schools lack basic facilities, teachers are underpaid and overworked, and the quality of education has suffered as a result.

This failure to address the education crisis has left Malawi’s youth without the necessary tools to build a better future.

Several Primary school teachers who were trained are still languishing in poverty as their counterparts-nurses.

Lack of Infrastructure Development

Infrastructure development is crucial for economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens. However, President Chakwera’s administration has shown a lack of progress in this area.

Despite promising to invest in infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, and electricity, little has been done to address the country’s infrastructure deficit.

This failure has hindered economic development and limited opportunities for Malawi’s citizens. However, he has favoured the centre as compared to the north and south.

Conclusion

In conclusion, President Lazarus Chakwera’s tenure in 2023 has been marked by major failures and a lack of progress in addressing the pressing issues facing Malawi.

From economic stagnation and high unemployment rates to corruption and a lack of accountability, the Chakwera administration has failed to deliver on its promises.

The inadequate healthcare system, education crisis, and lack of infrastructure development further highlight the missed opportunities and broken promises that have left Malawi’s citizens disillusioned.

As the year comes to an end, President Chakwera must reflect on these failures and take decisive action to rectify the situation, ensuring a brighter future for Malawi and its people.
