KARONGA—(MaraviPost)—In a historic and disappointing turn of events, newcomers Songwe Borderless have concluded the first round of the Malawi’s elite TNM Super League without a single victory.

The team secured a goalless draw against a ten-man Mighty Tigers at Karonga Stadium on Saturday, August 9, 2025, bringing their first-round tally to just two points from a possible 45.

The team, which was promoted from the Northern Region’s SIMSO league last year, has struggled to adapt to the top flight, managing only two points from two draws—one against Mzuzu City Hammers and the recent one against Mighty Tigers.

With a devastating goal difference of -37, having scored just five goals while conceding 42, Songwe Borderless sits firmly at the bottom of the league table.

This dismal performance has led many in the sports community to believe the team is destined for relegation, even with 15 matches still to be played in the second half of the season.

The team’s record is significantly worse than that of other recent newcomers.

In the 2024 season, Baka City managed to secure a win and finished the first round with seven points, while Bangwe All Stars also secured a win and six draws.

In stark contrast, Creck Sporting Club, another promoted team, finished in sixth place with 23 points, boasting six wins, five draws, and four losses.

Despite the dire statistics, head coach Christopher Nyambose remains optimistic about his team’s survival.

“The rate of survival is 70 percent,” Nyambose said after the draw with Mighty Tigers.

“We have 15 games remaining and we can pull a surprise. When I took charge, my focus was on both building the team and getting points. We have improved defensively, and now our main issue is scoring. We created over four chances today but lacked the maturity to convert them.”

Nyambose plans to address the issue during the transfer window.

“We will search for mature strikers to beef up the squad,” he explained. “I am hopeful that results will start coming and we will not be relegated.”

Meanwhile, Mighty Tigers head coach Leo Mpulula expressed his disappointment with his team’s first-round performance, which saw them finish in 13th place with 16 points. “We had a very poor display today,” Mpulula stated.

“We didn’t come to play, and we have finished the round on a bad note. We are still struggling because we lack firepower upfront. We’ve had too many draws this round, which shows we are not scoring enough goals. We will try to find new players in the transfer window who can score for us.”

Saturday’s match also saw Mighty Tigers’ Alex Kambirinya receive a red card after a second bookable offense. The home team’s winger, Bryson Kanambo, was named player of the match.

The first round of the league concludes on Sunday with several exciting fixtures: Chitipa United FC will host Blue Eagles FC, a match which President Lazarus Chakwera is set to attend.

Elsewhere, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will host Karonga United at Kamuzu Stadium, and defending champions Silver Strikers will face Mzuzu City Hammers at Rumphi Stadium.Whereas the current league leaders, Mighty Wanderers are in the capital City to face Civil Service United at Civo Stadium.
