KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Police Service in Karonga District are keeping in custody 42 Ethiopian nationals for allegedly entering the country without travelling documents.
The suspects have been identified as Samuel Dasslegn,20, Tamaigen Shirbashi, 20 and forty others were arrested at Songwe Border in the district on Monday September 25, 2023.
According to Karonga Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer Gersom Mwale, the arrest came following a tip-off from community members after noticing that strange people were hiding in the shop allegedly belonging to Richard Ng’oma popularly known as Pinda, situated along Songwe-Karonga M1 road.
“Arriving at the scene, police detectives found the suspects inside the shop but the owner is at large,” he said.
Mwale has since said that investigations are under way and the 42 suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer the charge of Illegal Entry contrary to section 21(1) as read with section 37(d) of Immigration Act.
Meanwhile Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa districts, hailed the Police’s alertness in taking swift action to follow up on the general public’s tip by uprehending the illegal immigrants.
“Many of these people who come into our country are military trained and can easily infiltrate our security system if we are not careful hence no one must aid or harbor illegal immigrants because if they do the long arm of the Police will take action with no mercy,” he explained.
The Paramount Chief has since expressed gratitude to community members for their patriotism and love for their country by offering up tip-offs to the Police in the arrest of the 42 Ethiopian Nationals.
