A 70-year-old man was Tuesday found dead along Kyungu River in the area of Traditional Authority Mwakaboko in Karonga District.

The district’s disaster officer Oswell Mkandawire said the man’s body was found around 9 am by a passerby.

Mkandawire said the unidentified man is suspected to have gone drinking and attempted to cross the flooded river at night on his way back home.

Confirming the incident, Karonga Police Station spokesperson George Mlewa said the body was found in decomposed state and police were yet to establish more details.

“We advise people to be very careful and observant when crossing rivers during rainy season especially at night to avoid such incidents,” Mlewa said.

Karonga has been receiving heavy rains leading to flooding of rivers.
