Addis Ababa, January 30: President Professor Peter Mutharika has said his Government will not allow women to be victimized in any way as far as he is President of Malawi.
The Malawi leader said it is sad that some men in this civilized society still keep torturing women a thing he described as old fashioned and barbaric.
The Malawi leader said this Friday January 30 when he delivered his maiden speech in the AU August House during the official Opening of the Summit which started on 23 January.
President Mutharika was speaking in reference to the 24th AU Extra Ordinary Summit Theme of 2015 which is dwelling much on the women empowerment and development.
During the 7 minute speech, Professor Peter Mutharika highlighted a number of strides Malawi is making to promote and protect the life of girls and women since he became President.
President Mutharika assured the AU of his country’s support and commitment towards fulfilling the AU recommendations in their quest for promotion and protection of girls and women.
Speaking earlier, Secretary General of United Nations -Ban ki Moon and the African Union out going Chairperson, President of Mauritania Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz thanked Malawi for peaceful elections and conveyed their condolences to those who lost lives due to heavy flooding that left thousands displaced and about 180 dead.
On the floods that hit Malawi, the President thanked all countries and Organisations that responded timely when Malawi got devastated with the floods.
Mutharika was the third to make his maiden speech after the Tunisian President and Edgar Lungu the newly elected President of Zambia.
After the lunch break, the Malawi leader met in camera the President of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete, Thabo Mbeki, former President of South Africa and Joachim Chissano former President of Mozambique.
It is believed that the discussions centered on the mediation of the Lake Malawi wrangle between Malawi and Tanzania. After this meeting, the President met Geoffrey Sacs the Professor in economics, again the meeting was held in camera.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. George Chaponda is expected to brief the press on what transpired during their meeting.
President Mutharika continues attending to numerous meetings from morning till late since he came to Addis Ababa.
Some Presidents and former Presidents who have already held series of meetings with President Mutharika include Edgar Lungu, Joachim Chissano, Jacob Zuma of South Africa among others.
The Summit ends on Saturday after adoption of various deliberations as decisions for the July Meeting.
