Mzuni suspends students for illegal demos

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Mzuzu University has, with immediate effect, suspended some of its students for allegedly playing a role in the illegal demonstrations the students conducted in front of the university, along M1 Road on Tuesday.

According to a memorandum from the Office of the University Registrar penned on 2nd November, 2019, fourteen students have been suspended and have been commanded not to step into the campus on the grounds of security of staff members.

“The decision for the suspension, pending hearing, has been necessitated by the need to restore order and assure safety and security on campus, following the illegal violent protests in which the suspended students are alleged to have played a role.”

“There is also an allegation that there are continued threats to deal with individual staff members and petrol-bomb others despite that a staff member was already injured by students who stoned him in the head,” reads the memo in part.

There has been no business at the campus this week as lecturers are demanding pay hike. On the other hand, students are asking the university to let them access their examination results, before sitting for supplementary examinations.

On Tuesday, Police arrested seven students for causing disorder both at the campus and along the M1 Road.
