A picture of Chilima’s motorcade speaks volumes about Malawi’s lack of security

Since Malawi’s independence celebrations on 6th July this year, There has been a picture of The Vice President Saulos Chilima motorcade heavily guarded entering the Kamuzu Stadium.

The picture has garnered its fair share of comments on Facebook as they say a picture speaks louder than words. In this case it just shows lack of security in Malawi as the Vice President sees need to surround himself with such heavily armed soldiers at a public event.

Mr Man Muweme wrote the following “Just a tip of an iceberg…. Telling the whole story in pictures…. Chilima must be a target of some mafias….but the man his name is Saulos Kluas Chilima, peoples man, maybe you don’t know, he is already ready to rule Malawi to greater heights not just as a VEEP but otherwise”

The picture looks straight out of a Hollywood movie of a third world dictator protecting himself from unhappy citizens. However this is not Hollywood but the reality in Malawi where security no longer exists. The Vice President is correct to demand such ominous protection as thieves have become so brazen in Malawi.

Just this past month alone an ACB director was killed and his car torched, “The Anti-Corruption Bureau regrets to inform members of the public about the tragic death of Mr. Issa Njauju. Mr. Njauju was murdered on the night of Thursday, the 2nd of July, 2015. His body was discovered on 4th July, 2015 and was laid to rest on the same day”. The death of Mr Njauju remains mysterious shot three times.

Wakeford a South African, was shot and killed in Malawi as he fought with robbers who had tried to force their way into the tent of a female travelling companion in Karonga.

Wakeford had been with Warwick Bruce Chapman, executive director of information at the DA’s head office, and a team of others who travelled through Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, and Rwanda to the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Malawi Police said officers from the ACB, including ACB Director Lukas Kondowe and his Deputy Reyneck Matemba had been receiving death threats, forcing the Malawi police to provide security.

Malawi Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Atupele Muluzi, has said gangs have reached levels of criminal sophistication that the Police are playing catchup.

The situation in Malawi is so bad that Malawians are now looking at the ‘shoot to kill’ order implemented by President Bingu WA Mutharika favorably.

There are rumors that Chilima is being protected for spying purposes rather than his own security. However The Malawi President Motorcade is just as heavily protected. Whatever the reason it is a situation that needs improvement to assure the Nation.
