ACB director Lucas Kondowe vows to be apolitical

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—As Malawians continue discrediting the country’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for its failure to wrestle with corruption impartially, the director of the graft busting  body Lucas Kondowe has assured the citizens of total professionalism at the organization.

Speaking on Capital FM on Wednesday, monitored by Maravi Post, Kondowe said the organization has been professional and it will continue to be as such in its effort to fight corruption.

“As an institution I can say we have done a great job. There have been criticisms; some constructive and some unconstructive but what I can assure you is that ACB is very professional; it is not a political organization. We are very professional and we will continue to be professional.

Kondowe: ACB Chief

“I would like to assure Malawians that the organization will protect their interests,” said Kondowe.

On the delay of handling cases which the ACB is sitting on, Kondowe attributed the delay to inadequate funding.

“I have travelled around the global. I have worked in the United States with the FBI. I have worked with prosecutors in the United States. Those institutions are well funded unlike us. When we bring the case to court we must have enough evidence and for us to have that evidence there is need for thorough investigation which requires more resources,” he said.

Kondowe’s remarks come at time Malawians are trashing the existence of the anti-corruption body, arguing it is only vigilant when handling issues involving opposition political parties’ members.

The ACB developed cold feet on the K577 billion cashgate scandal which senior cabinet ministers are allegedly to be involved.

Meanwhile, President Peter Mutharika has also given the organization a vote of no confidence by instituting a commission of inquiry to investigate the K26 billion Zambian maize-gate in which Admarc chief executive Foster Mulumbe is suspected to have corruptly bought the 100000 metric tonnes of maize from Zambia.

The deal is also implicating Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Devleopment, George Chaponda.
