ActionAid International rebukes Kwataine on ‘Mutharika must resign’ remarks given at PAC meeting

 By Our Reporter

Renowned global advocacy institution, ActionAid International has rubbished remarks made by their employee, Martha Kwataine, during the PAC conference when she called for President Mutharika to resign.

Kwataine, who joined ActionAid Malawi as Head of Program and Policy some months ago, represented her organization with a clear mandate of sticking to standard policy guidelines of ActionAid International.

However, she defied the order and went on to attack government and call for resignation of the President, a thing that has annoyed her bosses both in Malawi and at the headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Kwataine was quoted in the local media saying, “It is our considered views, as Action Aid, that Malawi President Peter Mutharika must heed the demands of the opposition that he should step down.” “Such remarks are in contrast with the policy direction of ActionAid International.

We remain apolitical and our focus is serving humanity through eradication of development bottlenecks in our catchment area which includes Malawi. As an organization we deny accountability on sentiments that have your personal bearing,” reads part of the statement from ActionAid International headquarters.

The anger by Kwataine’s bosses is justified because this is the first time ActionAid has ever meddled in the domestic politics of any country world over since its inception in 1972.

Before joining ActionAid, Kwataine worked at Malawi Health Equity Network (MEHN) where she was also accused of dragging the organization into unnecessary political activity.
