Leading Mobile telecommunications Company, Airtel Malawi, has handed over two Cheques worth K4Million to one of the humanitarian Organisations, Red Cross and Department of Disaster Management.
Airtel Malawi Chief Commercial Manager, Mr. Charles Kamoto, said his company decided to take part in the #NdifeAmodzi initiative to help flood victims.
Kamoto said through the sms collections to code 140, about K500,000 was realized and that Airtel has quadrupled it to live up to its promise.
“As a concerned and passionate corporate citizen, Airtel believes every little help counts and that
there is strength in togetherness for a thorough national cause,” said Kamoto.
This donation now brings Airtel’s contribution to the floods response slightly over MK12 million.
Receiving the cheques Commissioner for Disaster and Risk Management, Paul Chiunguzeni commended Airtel for the timely intervention.
Red Cross Youth Manager Leanard Maganga also commended Airtel saying the money will go a long way in rehabilitating lives of the affected citizenry.
“We are currently building boreholes in Nsanje and Chikwawa and on top of that we are also assisting those affected by Xenophobia in South Africa,” Said Maganga.
Through the sms code 140 of #NdifeAmodzi, all well-meaning citizens were requested to send a blank SMS or simply text ‘Ndife Amodzi’ to 140.
Each SMS cost MK100 and all proceeds have gone to Department of Disaster Management and Red Cross.
