President Professor Peter Mutharika has challenged that his Government will deliver all that it promised in its manifesto before it assumed power.
Speaking in Lilongwe Saturday night during Valentines’ fundraising dinner and dance organized by his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Mutharika boasted that only eight months after assuming power, there were already visible and tangible strides that indicated his Government’s effective and economic strategies citing the downward spiral of fuel prices as a huge example.
“Our reserves had only three to four weeks import cover in foreign exchange,” said the Mutharika adding; “We now have four to five months import cover; US$600 million at Reserve Bank of Malawi and about US$300 to US$400 million with commercial banks and forex bureaus which has led to the depreciation of the kwacha.”
He explained that it was the first time in Malawi’s history to achieve such economic success pointing out, on a different note, that some of the promises from the manifesto had already been accomplished while other projects were underway.
“We have launched the Civil Service Reform Commission, subsidized cement and iron sheets, opened the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST),” said the President who added that construction of Mombera University in Mzimba district was underway.
He has since called on the media to also focus on such positive development stories other than focusing on negative publicity.
Speaking earlier, Vice President Saulos Chilima had hailed President Mutharika as patient calm persistent and focused clarifying that those are the qualities that have made him pull through from campaign, through elections to the present success.
Also present at the event was DPP Secretary General Ecklein Kudontoni who also praised the Head of State saying now Malawi has a leader who knows which button to touch even in the absence of enough financial muscle and resources.
However, the first citizen called for national love, peace, unity and oneness in purpose saying that was the only recipe if Malawi was to develop.
“This is our country; let us love it and let us work hard together towards developing it in oneness to make it a better place for generations to come,” said the President.
The proceeds realised during the fundraising would be donated to the victims of the flood affected areas among others.
