DOWA-(MaraviPost)-Armour Battalion which was formerly known as Combat Support Battalion (Mvera Army) has donated assorted items worth MK1.2 million to more than 50 communities.
Armour battalion on Friday donated to their surrounding villages including Chiwere, Mphanda, Msikiti, Kaula, Ngodzi, and Mangulenje, Traditional Authority (TA) Chiwere in Mvera, Dowa district.
Among the assorted items that each person received including 15kgs of Maize flour, 1kg packet of sugar, table and kitchen salt, soya pieces, laundry soap, shoes and clothes among others.
In an interview after the donation, Battalion Welfare Fund Chairperson, Warrant Officer Class Two Jonathan Salifu said the lack of food support to communities in the above-mentioned villages has increased.
“We decided to assist the poor hungry people with maize flour to reduce the challenge of hunger that affected many families in our surrounding villages,” he said.
Group Village Mphanda thanked the battalion for the donation saying it would save their people from hunger.
“Our people lack food support from their children and relatives hence most of them sleep with empty stomach (Hungry) daily causes their body to develop frequent sickness,” group village Mphanda said.
Group village Sikiti concurred with Mphanda said that this year hunger has affected them because they don’t have access to money to buy farm equipment such as fertilizer.
“We cannot manage to source food on our own through cultivation,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mero Chauma from Mangulenje Village thanked the battalion for the donation saying clothes and other assorted items received will change their lives.
“Hunger is one of the challenges that has affected us, so the donation we have received will reduce some of our challenges including hunger.
“We eat once a day due to food shortage but this support will assist us to enjoy two meals a day,” he said.
