In a significant development, the Blantyre Chief Resident Magistrate Court has revoked the bail of Wim Akster, a Dutch national accused of sexually abusing beneficiaries of a bursary scheme at Timotheos Foundation, including workers at the humanitarian organization.
The court’s decision has been welcomed by child rights activists, who believe it will help expedite the case.
Memory Chisenga, a prominent child rights activist, expressed satisfaction with the court’s ruling, stating that it will help ensure that the case is heard without unnecessary delays.
“This is a positive step towards justice,” Chisenga said in an interview with this publication, adding that,”We hope that the court will continue to prioritize the rights and well-being of the victims in this case.”
The court’s decision to revoke Akster’s bail was based on several factors, including his deliberate delay of court processes and failure to appear in court as scheduled.
State Lawyer Victor Jere expressed satisfaction with the ruling, saying that it was a clear indication that the court would not tolerate attempts to obstruct justice.
“Our investigation team over the weekend noted that the accused was able to attend to official duties, but failing to appear in court today is one of those tactics to avoid the wheels of justice,” Jere told journalists in Blantyre.
“We are pleased that the court has seen through these tactics and has revoked the bail.”
Akster’s defense lawyer, Counsel Fostino Maere, had no immediate comment on the ruling.
The case will continue to be heard by Chief Resident Magistrate Paul Chiotcha on May 16, 2025.
The allegations against Akster are serious, and if convicted, he could face severe penalties.
The case has sparked widespread outrage and concern, with many calling for swift and decisive action to be taken against those responsible.
The Timotheos Foundation, where Akster worked, has faced scrutiny over its handling of the allegations.
The organization’s leadership has a responsibility to ensure that its employees operate with integrity and that beneficiaries are protected from harm.
As the case continues, many will be watching closely to see how the court ultimately rules.
The outcome will have significant implications for Akster and for the broader community, particularly those who have been affected by the alleged abuse.
The court’s decision to revoke Akster’s bail is a significant step towards justice.
The case will continue to unfold, and many will be eagerly awaiting the court’s ruling on May 16, 2025.
