Kasungu, February 11, 2015, First Lady of this country, Madame Gertrude Mutharika has promised to continue promoting the pride of girl’s education in the country through her trust by making sure that learning environments are conducive at all cost.

There are plans to construct a hostel to ease congestion problems that have rocked the school since its establishment in 1964 as the sole girls’ hostel which was designed to accommodate 40 girls, is now accommodating over 130 girls.
Due to limited accommodation at the sole girl’s hostel, the school management is reported to have squeezed in more beds to cater for other girl’s which has led to having two girl’s share a bed instead of, one girl per bed. The development is said to have contributed to poor sanitation.
Speaking when she planted trees at the campus, Madame Mutharika through her BEAM Trust has promised to construct another girl’s hostel at the school which she hopes would solve some of the problems still hindering education standards currently.
“One of the mandates under this trust is to make sure that girl’s education is promoted and that they [girls] should also excel in life
We are to do everything possible so that our children continue learning in better environments conducive for their studies. I am promising to construct another girl’s hostel here by all means” she highlighted.
According to reports, Kasungu Secondary School currently has a total enrollment of 411 students, whereas 137 are girls and 274 are boys.
And in his remarks, Acting Head Master of KUSS, Bernard Jimu Phiri said that the current accommodation problems, especially for girl’s hostel, has nothing but put them into disrepute as sanitation and hygiene standards are below par.
“Lack of space in the hostels have forced us to let two girls’ share the same bed, and the packing of their luggage is also a challenge which has made cleaning of such rooms a hard task to go for
“The promise made to us by the first lady is a sigh of relief and we hope that it would contribute greatly in uplifting education standards” Phiri said.
According to the Head Master, a healthy environment is necessary for healthy fleshy minds in class that would improve their studies in class.
Kasungu Secondary School was established in 1964 and has produced great minds like, Vice Chancellor of LUANAR Professor George Kanyama Phiri and also Dr. Yobe Lungu, Executive Director of Nkhoma University, just to mention a few.
