To say I was at the thickest of things during the preparations, the vote-casting day and the subsequent uncertain days would be an understatement. I saw every figure come and go, I heard every update going on in the country at that time and I was entrusted with noble tasks in regards to Peoples Party electoral approach.
The biggest lesson came two days after the casting of the vote. The tide was changing and from within the palace we knew things were taking a turn, not in our favor.
The ever-jammed parking lot in the palace became empty with every passing minute. The ever-packed Banana Room on meal times became deserted at an alarming rate. It broke my heart that the very people who benefited from Dr Joyce Banda on personal levels quickly drove to Nyambadwe to pay courtesy call to the President-elect, APM.
Some of us stuck to our candidate up until we witnessed her drive out of the Lion gates on the same day APM took oath of office.
I learnt that the smiles I had seen from the betraying lot towards JB in her 2-year tenure were mere cosmetic cover-ups to gain favors from her in one way or another.
I hold my head high for not betraying her even after the defeat. NEVER BETRAY PEOPLE BY DEFYING YOUR DEEPEST CONVICTION.
That remains my best lesson of 2014.
