Blantyre City Mayor Joseph Makwinja has issued a seven-day ultimatum to two German nationals, Aaron Landt and Julian Balko, to reveal the names of Blantyre City Council (BCC) officials allegedly involved in demanding bribes for charity work. This development follows a press briefing held at the Blantyre Civic Offices this morning.

Landt, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Landt Foundation, and Balko have accused BCC officials of soliciting bribes to permit their charitable activities within the city. These accusations, if proven true, could severely damage the reputation of the BCC and undermine public trust in its operations.

Mayor Makwinja has responded to the allegations by demanding transparency. “The claims made are serious and could tarnish the BCC’s image,” he said. He emphasized the importance of addressing the issue swiftly and ensuring accountability. The Mayor has requested that Landt and Balko provide the names of the alleged corrupt officials within seven days. If the Germans fail to comply, Makwinja stated that legal action would be pursued to further investigate the matter.

The bribery allegations were brought to light during a meeting between Landt, Balko, and Vice-President Michael Usi at Mudi State Residence in Blantyre. During the meeting, Landt and Balko expressed their concerns about the conduct of BCC officials, which led to the Mayor’s call for disclosure.

The seven-day deadline set by Mayor Makwinja is a critical period for both the German nationals and the BCC. The outcome will determine the course of further action and the steps that will be taken to address the corruption claims. The situation underscores the need for transparency and integrity in public service, and the response from both parties will be closely monitored by the public and the media.

In conclusion, the demand for disclosure represents a significant step in addressing potential corruption within the Blantyre City Council and upholding the principles of good governance and accountability.
