Botswana’s Zebras spoil Malawi’s 61st Independence Day Celebrations

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi senior national football team, the Flames, drew 1-1 with Botswana in an Independence Day Celebrations match at Bingu National Stadium,on Sunday.

Although the match ended in regulation time with both teams sharing the points, Botswana emerged victorious, winning 3-0 on post-match penalties.

In other sports news, Malawi’s Under-20 Women’s Football Team suffered a 1-0 loss to Botswana in their second Cosafa Under-20 Women’s Championship group match in Windhoek, Namibia.

Despite a goalless draw against Namibia, Malawi still has a chance to qualify if they win their last match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

Malawi’s Under-20 men’s football team drew 1-1 with Angola in their Cosafa Under-20 Championship match, with Mwisho Mhango winning his second consecutive man-of-the-match award.

The Malawi Cricket Team lost by 72 runs to Tanzania in the Quad Nations T20 Cup at TCA Oval in Blantyre, marking their second successive defeat in the tournament.Tanzania scored 192/4, while Malawi managed 120/7.

In a more positive note, Malawi’s Indoor Volleyball team won 3-1 against Botswana in the Africa Union Sports Association (Ausc) Region 5 Games at Showground Sports Plaza in Windhoek, Namibia.

Chess enthusiasts are enjoying the Malawi Open Chess Championship at Sigerege Beach Resort in Salima, with defending champion Fide Master Joseph Mwale leading the leaderboard with five points from five straight wins.

The sports events showcase Malawi’s participation and competitiveness in various regional and international tournaments, with teams striving to make their mark and bring pride to the nation.
