BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, through his humanitarian arm Shepherd Bushiri Foundation (SBF), has today announced a COVID-19 response intervention worth K50 million in Malawi.
According to a media statement released by Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) spokesperson, Ephraim Nyondo, the intervention is just a continuation of what SBF is doing in countries such as South Africa, USA and India in responding to COVID-19.
Through the Malawi intervention, SBF will be distributing, freely, several amenities aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 among disadvantaged communities and, also, areas where essential public services are provided.
“Further, the intervention will also see SBF working with the media in raising awareness of the pandemic, in the rural areas, through production of radio jingles, posters and tracts. Some of the already purchased amenities include: hand sanitizers, face masks, surgical gloves and water buckets.
“Some of the targeted beneficiaries includes: villages, prisons, rural health centers, minibus drivers, bicycle taxis and the media,” reads the statement. The intervention is already in motion and SBF would like to partner with community based organisations already working on COVID-19,” the statement reads.
Few days ago Bushiri attracted criticism for asking for tithes during the lockdown. He instructed his members to pay tithes into the church bank account.
But Ephraim Nyondo said they are raising money for a campaign against Covid-19.
“The prophet intends to raise more money from well-wishers across the globe; the money needed to buy ventilators, face masks, gloves and hand sanitisers which will be given freely to any place where it’s needed,” said Nyondo.
Bushiri has been intervening in different emergencies in the country. Recently, Bushiri sold maize at a cheaper price to Malawians when the country was hit by hunger.
